Goodbye to New York

Our RV Life takes us back on the road again....back down to VA.  We had a nice time in NY with family and friends, but we decided to head back to VA for a while.  We arrived and are busy getting situated now.  We brought all of Chad's mechanic tools down with us.

We wanted to share some pictures we took while in NY.  When we left, Spring was in full bloom and everything was so green and beautiful.

Camping in the Adirondacks

Camping in the Adirondacks

This past weekend, our RV life took us on a road trip up to the Adirondacks for a little recreation and relaxation.  We love it up there and also have many great memories there from our honeymoon.  You may also remember that our first trip in the RV was to the Adirondacks.

We always have fun riding ATV trails.  It's so beautiful.  Here are a few creeks that cross the trails there.

The weather was absolutely beautiful, actually the warmest it's been since we came back up north.  Sunday & Monday it was 80 degrees.  However, there aren't any flowers blooming yet up there.  In fact, we still saw some snow along the side of the roads and on the tops of the mountains.

We boondocked (drycamped) for the entire weekend.  We did borrow a generator though and used it to charge our batteries.  We still need to get ours running good.

The RV is running super good.  We did our first oil change before this trip; it's hard to believe we've already driven it 3,000 miles.  We've also done some more maintenance on it recently, which has helped a lot.  More about that later...

Connecticut....for work

About a week ago, we went back to Connecticut for work and also incorporated a volunteer project to Brooklyn, NY into the trip.  It was nice to see the beginning of Spring again with all the flowers just starting to bloom and the trees budding.  We boondocked (drycamped) there for the first couple of days and then we plugged into electricity.  We used our inverter and pulled power off the extra battery.  It's so great to have the RV with us because we save a lot of time and energy driving back and forth.

Here are some more Spring pictures from CT....

Goodbye to Virginia....for now

Well, we had a really nice time in VA.  We escaped the rest of winter in NY, saw the beginning of Spring, got a lot of work accomplished, and enjoyed some warm weather.  Now our RV life takes us back up to NY for work.  But, we plan to come back to Virginia again soon.

Here are some pics from our time in VA.....

It was so nice that we skipped the end of winter in NY.  but, even so, I think this is the happiest I've ever been to see Spring come.  I can't even explain how great it was - I know all of our friends in NY understand...

Heading South in the RV during Winter Storm Sparta

Well, we finally did it - tried to outrun a snowstorm. We have been dying to do this all winter, and it finally happened.  We are heading south to Virginia because my dad has some work.  We have had very little work this winter, and trying to survey in snow this deep is very exhausting. So, we jumped at the opportunity to head south.

Where the front RV tire was buried in ice
Our icy walkway to the RV. We kept putting salt down, but the ice just kept growing.
Checking the tire pressure before we left  It was 13 degrees F.

Chad with a very long icicle
We left Saturday morning. There was only a couple of days in between storms. So, this was our window. Our plan was to drive halfway & spend the night. There was snow coming in NY on Sunday from winter storm Sparta, and the weather report was all clear on Sunday in VA.

Before we left, Chad checked everything over really good and added air to the tires as needed.  We stopped about a mile after we left to add brake fluid.  You may remember back in October that we had noticed some problems with the brakes.  Apparently the fluid leaked out gradually over time.  He says there is more maintenance required on the brakes.  He actually has a long list of things maintenance to do for the RV.  It's just been too icy and cold to do it.  He has hopes of getting everything done much easier in VA.

On Saturday evening, we stopped at a rest area to stay the night in Harrisburg, PA.  It was going to be a nice relaxing evening....until we checked the weather report.  We realized that the winter storm was actually going to hit PA & VA on Sunday.  Yikes!!  So, we decided to drive a little farther and we spent the night in a shopping center parking lot.  We asked permission and they said it would be fine.  It actually worked out good because the rest area would have been really noisy from highway traffic.  The parking lot was very quiet all night.

Sunday, we got up early to leave right at daybreak.  Just as we were leaving we noticed a few flurries starting.  That was a little scary.  As we continued down the highway, it started snowing harder, but we made it through that fine.  Then, there was no precipitation for a while as we drove through Maryland.  As we hit Washington, D.C., the freezing rain started.  That's when it got really scary - the worst thing in the world is to drive in ice!  Fortunately, they had trucks out on the roads salting everything.  We drove slow while everyone around us was driving like the weather was fine.  Sure enough, two miles before our exit, there was a 5 car pile up.  And, just before that, someone had run off the road and hit a guardrail.  We were so relieved to arrive safely at my parents' house.

Parked in VA
The temperature was around 20 degrees F for most of our trip.  We actually noticed a benefit of driving in really cold weather.  The RV had a lot more power.  Why is that?  It's because the air has more density, which allows the engine to burn more fuel.  This is true for any carbureted engine.

Braving the cold in the RV

This week our RV life takes us back down to Greenwich, CT where we have more surveying work.  The weather delayed us a little - ice / rain on Monday and heavy winds yesterday.  So, we waited until this morning to move the RV. It has gotten much colder this week too.  Since we do land surveying, we are outside a lot.  We have to bundle up good.

Dressed for the cold / wind
Yesterday the forecast was calling for the temperatures to be mostly in the mid 20's.  But, fortunately, it stayed around 30 degrees most of the day.  So, I didn't have to keep wearing quite as many clothes as you see pictured here.

Ice on the inside of the windshield this morning.
We have been concerned about the liquids in our holding tanks freezing.  So, Chad did some research and decided to put rock salt in the tanks. Seems to be working so far...

Adding warm water to the tub to dissolve the salt.
P.S. I have stayed much warmer when working outside by wearing Under Armour  and a faux fur hat.
